Public practice in the South West of England is BOOMING!
And at Public Practice Recruitment Ltd, we’re placing candidates left, right and centre in some really exciting roles with firms, big and small, in all corners of this region where the quality of life is unrivalled.
In today’s article, we wanted to explain to candidates open to relocating, expanding their job search or already living in this area, why a job as an accountant in the South West of England has so much to offer.
We thought we’d approach this by busting some myths.
Myth number 1: Salaries in the South West of England are lower than in other areas of the country.
WRONG!
We have to hold our hands up and say that we can’t comment for all industries, but in the field of public practice this assumption is entirely wrong. Take a look at the job highlights at the bottom of this article – you’ll notice that the salaries on offer are super competitive and we’re firm in our belief that your chances of earning highly in the South West are as high as any other region in the country.
Myth number 2: Rates of unemployment are high in the South West.
WRONG!
Figures released by the Office of National Statistics for the three months ending in November 2022 showed that rates of unemployment in the South West sat at 2.1% which was the lowest region nationally. So the total opposite of this myth is in fact the current truth!
Myth number 3: There’s not much going on in the South West.
WRONG!
We all know that generally, those living in the South West enjoy an excellent quality of life due to close proximity to the sea, wide open spaces and nature. But there’s plenty on offer when it comes to culture, nightlife and urban experiences too.
The cities of Plymouth, Exeter and Bristol offer world class shopping, fine dining, theatre and places to party. There’s art in abundance in many of the seaside towns (including a branch of The Tate Gallery in St Ives.) And many of the market and coastal towns in the area such as Stroud, Frome, Dartmouth and Lyme Regis offer amazing communities of modern professionals who all enjoy working hard as well as shared hobbies and pastimes.
Myth number 4: The public transport is a disaster in the South West.
Now, historically we’ll admit there has been room for improvement. BUT, the situation is constantly improving and there are significant developments underway to well and truly bust this myth!
Via the second round of the government’s Levelling Up Fund, the South West is set to benefit from more than £186 million in infrastructure grants in the coming years with the largest chunk of that heading to Cornwall where the quality of life is off the charts for accountants who want to work hard and play hard!
A £50m grant will help create a new direct train service, linking four of Cornwall’s largest urban areas: Newquay, St Austell, Truro, and Falmouth and Penryn. Dorset, Bristol and Somerset are also set to benefit in a massive way.
So things are really ramping up when it comes to transport links in the South West but there’s even more great news when it comes to the logistics of getting to and from work in this part of the county…..
Most employers are embracing flexible, hybrid and remote working so the vast majority of jobs on offer will include at least an element of home working, meaning long and difficult commutes will be far less frequent and the possibly of living rurally or perhaps close to the beach is something that can nestle perfectly alongside a thriving career in public practice.
Myth number 5: Opportunities at contemporary practices in the Southwest are few and far between.
WRONG! Really, really wrong!
Our jobs board is absolutely buzzing with roles at every level in all parts of the region. Here’s just a few of the highlights but you’ll want to do a more thorough search we’re sure.
