A career in Accountancy

To succeed in Accounts, you need a healthy mix of interpersonal skills and an acute eye for detail. You also need to be reasonably computer literate.

Semi-Senior Accountant

Semi Senior Accountants are employed within accountancy firms otherwise known as public practices or accountancy practices.

Typically, as a Semi Senior, you’ll study towards your professional accountancy exams which you’ll usually sit through the ACCA or ACA. Alternatively, some you might sit your AAT exams before progressing onto your ACCA/ACA studies.

Deciding which professional accountancy examination route to take can be daunting, indeed, occasionally, some Semi Seniors find themselves changing routes part way through their studies.

We work with accountancy firms throughout the UK. Whichever exam route you choose to take, we’ll help you to find the perfect career path.

You’ll often find that Accountancy firms will support their Semi Seniors through their professional accountancy examinations by providing study support or a training contract.

These can vary from one firm to the next. They might include paying for exams, giving time off for study, for sitting the exams or re-sits or even providing in-house training support.

In most cases, Semi Seniors undertake a wide range of general accountancy work. This can include

  • accounts preparation
  • external audit
  • VAT returns
  • bookkeeping
  • tax computations (both personal tax and corporate tax)
  • ad-hoc accounting duties
  • providing general support to Senior Accountants

As a Semi Senior, once you become an exam qualified ACCA or ACA Accountant, depending on the accountancy firm you work for, you may be promoted to a Senior Accountant level and enjoy more responsibilities.

Semi Seniors are often the backbone to the ‘engine room’ of an accountancy firm. They are often the ones who put statutory accounts together for a Senior Accountant, Accountancy Manager/Client Manager or Partner to review.

Senior Accountant

As a Senior Accountant, you’ll be employed within accountancy firms otherwise known as public practices or accountancy practices.

Typically, you’ll be qualified to ACCA, ACA or CA level or qualified by experience – you might have no formal accountancy qualification but you will have the practical experience to undertake the role. In this case you would be referred to as a Qualified By Experience Accountant.

Some Senior Accountants complete the AAT examinations before progressing onto their ACCA, ACA or CA professional accountancy exams. Some accountancy firms believe that holding the AAT qualification ensures an accountant has a solid foundation to their general accounting skills.

We’ll help advise you on the employment options available to you in relation to the accountancy qualifications you hold.

In most cases, you’ll undertake a wide range of general accountancy work including

  • accounts preparation
  • reviewing statutory accounts prepared by less experienced accountants
  • external audit
  • VAT returns
  • bookkeeping
  • tax computations (both personal tax and corporate tax)
  • ad-hoc accounting duties
  • supporting Accountancy Managers/Client Managers and Partners

You may also manage your own client portfolio, consisting of organisations such as

  • Limited Companies
  • Sole traders
  • Limited Liability Partnerships
  • Charities
  • Not for Profit Organisations
  • Academies
  • High Net Worth Individuals
  • Owner Manager Businesses etc

Client Manager

A Client Manager works directly with an accountancy firm’s clients, as the job title suggests, you will manage clients.

As a Client Manager, you will invariably manage your own client portfolio or assist in the management of a large portfolio. Typical duties include

  • preparing accounts and tax returns
  • reviewing the accounts work of more junior staff
  • auditing financial information
  • compiling and presenting reports, budgets, business plans, commentaries and financial statements
  • analysing accounts and business plans
  • providing tax planning services with reference to current legislation
  • financial forecasting and risk analysis
  • negotiating the terms of business deals and moves with clients and associated organisations
  • meeting and interviewing clients
  • managing colleagues, workloads and deadlines
  • assisting in the promotion of your firms services to both new and existing clients.
