Candidates - an Outline of External Auditing
To succeed as an external auditor, you need a combination of first-rate people skills and a high level of attention to detail. Only with these qualities will you be able to help businesses of all types and sizes achieve their performance potential.
As an external auditor, you’ll be providing businesses, their investors and market regulators with a clear picture of how they’re performing. To do this, you’ll need to be proficient at examining financial records and related data.
Your auditing work will extend beyond mere financial audit. More often than not, you’ll be working with your clients to help them identify and manage risks across all areas of their business.
You can split Audit Jobs or Careers into two distinct fields.
1. Financial audit
This involves examining a company’s financial records and statements. You’re then able to provide a certification of their current financial position and make appropriate recommendations.
2. Non-financial (or corporate) Audit
This is where you examine non-financial information to provide assurance in other areas or help a company address specific problems. The scope of this work can be broad. It will often depend on the client’s needs and the services offered by your Practice.
Non-financial audit could also include;
- Assurance on regulation compliance
- Audit of operational procedures or systems
- Assessing value for money or risk of fraud
- Analysis of performance against sustainability or equality and diversity goals
Responsibilities of an External Auditor
- Visiting clients and finding out about their business needs
- Planning and carrying out audit procedures
- Attend meetings and interviewing staff to gather audit evidence
- Examining accounts, financial records and other documentation
- Observe/undertake stock takes or other business procedures
- Using analytics to assess financial reporting, fraud or operational business risks
- Preparing or contributing to a final audit report, including making recommendations for improvements to processes or systems
- Discussing with the client the audit conclusion and recommendations
