Payroll Assistant

Role Responsibilities

  • Processing payroll from start to finish for a range of businesses
  • Entering and updating employee information accurately using leading payroll software
  • Calculating salaries, statutory deductions (e.g. PAYE, NIC), and holiday pay
  • Managing employee changes including starters, leavers, and pension enrolments
  • Preparing and submitting reports on wages, tax, pensions, and other deductions
  • Investigating and resolving payroll discrepancies and queries
  • Supporting auto-enrolment pension schemes and reconciling related contributions
  • Maintaining detailed payroll records in line with regulatory compliance
  • Occasionally assisting with administrative tasks to support the wider team

Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience in payroll processing (practice-based or multi-client experience preferred)
  • Strong IT skills and confidence using payroll software (e.g. BrightPay, Xero, QuickBooks, or Sage)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word
  • Ideally CIPP qualified, but experienced candidates without formal qualifications will also be considered
  • A sharp eye for detail, with a methodical and organised approach
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to manage your time effectively and prioritise under pressure
  • A positive, team-oriented mindset
