Employers: your team should NOT be working harder!
How many times have you said to yourself “There just aren’t enough hours in the day?” Well, for the first time in four years, you have a whole extra day to do whatever you please – Saturday 29th February! Yes, it’s a Saturday too.
So, what will you do with your extra day this leap year? Spend time with family, catch up with friends, catch up with work? Maybe you’ll be down on one knee, ladies? However you decide to spend your extra day, we hope you make the most of it.
All of this wishing for extra time in our lives made us think about how we shouldn’t be waiting every four years for a leap year to improve our productivity! We should make the most of every day – especially at work, as that’s where we spend most of our lives after all. So, how can we do everything we need to do during the day, without eating into our personal time and without burning ourselves out.
How to ensure we work smarter and NOT harder.
Effectiveness over efficiency – Efficiency is all about completing a task, maybe in a faster time. Effectiveness is about doing all of the right things and achieving a positive result. You need to focus on the things that matter. Trim the fat and do fewer tasks…really well. Also, scrap that vague, never-ending to do list and make tasks really specific and measurable. If client calls are on the agenda today then give yourself a target – 12 client calls by lunchtime. Focus on one task at a time, take regular breaks and eat that frog (tackle the job you’re dreading before all others)!
“When it comes to applying this new effective mindset to your hiring strategy, you should be persuading fewer people to apply! Cramming more applicants into a wide hiring funnel will take you longer to weed out the real talent. Every applicant costs you time and money. Instead create a small, high quality applicant pool for more positive results.”
Garry Howling of Public Practice Recruitment Ltd
Go digital – The more distinguished readers amongst us (old!) will remember being handed a year’s worth of receipts in a shoe box and then being expected to complete a client’s tax return. With the minimum technology available, it would take days to sort through and piece together.
Thankfully, digital technology is helping us work smarter in all aspects of our work. We can connect remotely, solve complex tasks and leverage people and equipment more efficiently with the right technology. Client portals, cloud-based accounting and scan and input software – it’s the modern accountancy world we live in and it’s accepted by all.
That’s why we’re always surprised when accountancy firms don’t extend this to their recruitment strategy. Generation Z aren’t at recruitment fairs, and neither are your passive candidates and diverse workforce. You need to go where these people are actually hanging out. Save the time, money and effort of travelling to career fairs and events and invest in a digital hiring strategy. Social media marketing, SEO, PPC campaigns, candidate lead pages on your website – all smarter and more effective ways to target talent.
Garry Howling says, “We use digital technology as part of our business strategy at Public Practice Recruitment Ltd, but it’s finely balanced with building personal relationships with candidates and accountancy firms. And that’s what gives the edge in sourcing the top talent within our industry.”
Outsource – As an employer, you wouldn’t get directly involved in the tactical side of marketing, be called upon to solve a complex IT issue or arrange the finer details of the Christmas party. If you do, you need to seriously consider delegating! It doesn’t make financial sense to take on these responsibilities yourself. They are completed more effectively by the experts. However, we understand it’s easily done, especially if you are a business owner, a small accountancy firm or someone who likes to be in control.
When it comes to recruiting, you’ll definitely be implementing your new attitude shift of working smarter not harder, by outsourcing this job to a specialist recruitment agency. Forget the job ads, candidate screening and recruitment software. By handing over the responsibility to a third party, you’ll:
- Save money
- Reduce time to hire
- Improve candidate quality
“Garry and Public Practice Recruitment Ltd have great connections and contacts throughout accountancy firms across the UK. This means that they can match the needs of both the firms and candidates rather than just dealing with volumes.”
