The COVID-19 boom in freelancers – and why it’s great news for all of us

More freelancers means a busier accountancy sector

SMEs are turning to freelancers on an unprecedented scale to keep business going during this time of social distancing.

Prior to lockdown, there were over 2 million freelancers in the UK. The top specialisms in demand being SEO writing, marketing management, customer support, logistics and shipping and medical translation.

According to reports, the number of people who have gone freelance and set up their own business during the COVID-19 crisis has risen four-fold. In fact, London alone has seen a 500% rise in freelancers.

And as long as there is a need for small businesses and freelancers, there is an opportunity for accountants.

So, what are millennial freelancers and small business owners in a post-coronavirus world looking for in an accountancy professional?

Do your homework – Freelancers are time poor. Your proposition needs to be clear. You should be able to demonstrate a solid understanding of their business, and their industry. Most importantly, you should be able to demonstrate how you can add value and deliver a ROI.

Digital presence – It’s a competitive industry and you’ll need to embrace a proactive digital marketing strategy to get noticed, and stay ahead. And it goes without saying, that a tech-heavy, paperless service is something which these clients look for.

Full-service offering – Although they prefer digital systems, having a partner onboard who can offer the ‘big picture’ advice is essential, such as what problems to expect down the line and how their business could perform financially within their market.

First class communication – The entrepreneur rarely works 9-5, and around-the clock availability across a variety of channels could be a challenge for some firms to provide. And adopting new technologies, such as website chat boxes – could be something which many accountancy firms may not be accustomed to. But for a piece of this pie, investing in such tech could pay dividends.
