Earth Day 2022

How can Accountancy Firms #InvestInourPlanet

Every year on the 22nd April the global community gets together to celebrate Earth Day, a day where we focus on protecting the biggest and most important resource any of us have, our home – Planet Earth.

And this Earth Day the theme is ‘Invest in our Planet.’

The official website tells us:

‘For Earth Day 2022, we need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably). It’s going to take all of us. All in. Businesses, governments, and citizens — everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable. A partnership for the planet.’

So falling under the banner of businesses and citizens, what can we as accountancy practices and members of the global community do in practical terms to invest in our planet?

Let’s start by looking at your corporate responsibility programme.

Here’s a few ideas of practical actions you can take that involve an investment of your time and money.

  • Invest your time and the time of your employees into away days or team building events where you’re actually doing something to clean up and help protect our planet. Register a Great Global Clean Up via the Earth Day website and come together as a team by cleaning up your local area.

  • Allow your staff to donate a percentage of their earnings tax -free (before you’ve even paid it to them) to an amazing earth focused cause. You could even offer to match their donations. There’s so many to choose from but one of the charities suggested by the Earth Day organisers this year is The Canopy Project, a global cause focusing on reforesting the planet.

  • Invest your time and resources into educating the people who work in and around your firm. The Earth Day website signposts visitors to an array of different webinars covering topics from sustainable fashion right through to how we can teach our children to better protect the planet. But as leaders in practice it’s important that we understand that even issues such as professional gender inequities are linked to climate change so consider encouraging your Partnership team to watch this video on Women in Leadership.

  • Look at your premises and how you operate your offices on a practical level. Could you appoint a sustainability champion from your workforce? Someone who is passionate about leading environmental change and who will help you become more sustainable in your everyday practices? Every little thing matters so having someone who can ensure you’re recycling properly and consider how energy efficient your premises are, can make a real difference to your firm’s carbon footprint.

The ICPP (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report published in August of 2021 was described as a “code red for humanity”, and top scientists warned global communities that if we continue living as we do now, temperatures are set to rise catastrophically beyond the critical figure of 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels this century. So really this Earth Day should be the most important date in all of our calendar year.

But it’s really easy to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the problem and to feel like you can’t make a difference as just one person or one organisation in a vast ocean of billions. But in the words of Margaret Mead,

‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.’

This year why don’t you start by taking a few moments to look at the 2022 Invest in our Planet Toolkits as provided by the Earth Day organisers. We challenge any firm not to find one or two actions that they can really easily make that will, collectively, make a big difference.
