Choose to Challenge for International Women’s Day

March 8th 2021 is International Women’s Day!

And the fact that it’s the day that English school children return to their classrooms is not lost on the millions of women in the UK who, despite massive advances in gender equality, have had to bear more than their fair share of the child caring burden that the pandemic has placed on families.

So it makes absolute sense that, here at Public Practice Recruitment Ltd, we’re shouting from the rooftops about this special day and embracing the IWD2021 #ChoosetoChallenge message.

Is accountancy leading the way in gender diversity?

The answer is sadly, not yet! We’ve made significant strides down the road to creating a genuinely diverse, UK industry and it’s been fab to see some big firms and organisations opening up about their gender pay gap, and using the pandemic as a reason to strengthen already present flexible working offers.

But the gender pay gap is still ever present in accountancy and we still have too few women at board level. Those who make it to the top do a fantastic job of inspiring future female leaders but there is still plenty of work to be done to narrow the gap.

What does Choose to Challenge involve?

In the words of the organisers of the International Women’s Day initiative…

‘A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day.

We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.

From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.’

‘As someone who has always been inspired and surrounded by strong women, I know first hand the impact great female accountants have on the industry and the lucky firms who employ them. I’ll always make it a priority to challenge gender bias whether it’s conscious or unconscious and I encourage any candidates I work with to do the same. That might be as simple as questioning the lack of flexibility a firm is able to offer or challenging more blatant discrimination in a job advert or interview process. We’re here to support female applicants to search for the very best accountancy jobs the sector has to offer.’
