Accountancy jobs: do you share your employer’s values?

Culture means different things to each individual, but what is certain is that it means something to almost half of accountants, who look for strong core values when looking for a job.

So, you’re not alone if you feel like the current culture where you work isn’t a good fit for you.

Accountancy jobs: why core values are important

Your core values are your beliefs — when they don’t match other people’s or the company’s, it can lead to a feeling of resentment.

It might seem strange to compare your personal values to those of your employer, but organisational culture policies are written by people — who might not share your beliefs.

For instance, if you believe in sustainability, you might find it challenging to comprehend why a business doesn’t share your views.

Accountancy jobs: do your values match your employer’s?

If you feel that you are regularly butting heads when it comes to your employer’s core values, you should:

  1. Try to understand what your core values are.
  2. Compare them to the company’s values.
  3. Work out where the strongest conflicts exist.

Once you know this, it’s essential to decide whether you can overcome them and adapt to the company’s culture or whether they are too strong to ignore.

If they are too strong to ignore, you won’t thrive or perform while you harbour resentment. But that doesn’t mean you need to move jobs straight away — you need to give your employer the chance to understand.

Do you feel that a change in values would be beneficial for your employer? If the answer is yes, then it’s worth discussing it with your employer, highlighting the benefits to the organisation.

Examples of values could be celebrating successes, being inclusive, and corporate and social responsibility.

Accountancy jobs: how to identify culture in a future employer

If you’re ready to move on to your next accounting job, it’s crucial to ensure you don’t repeat history regarding organisational values.

Here are some ways you can find out what the true culture of an organisation is:

  • Look at the company’s website.
  • Look at reviews of the company on Glassdoor.
  • Speak to the recruitment consultant managing the accounting job vacancy.
  • Talk to the employer at the interview stage.

Accountancy jobs: values at interview stage

So, if you’ve found a company you like and you’ve been offered an interview, how do you find out if the culture they advertise is real and embedded?

The best way is to wait until the end, where you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions.

Here are some suggested questions:

  • I’ve noticed that your website talks about your commitment to {insert value}, which I think is excellent. I’d like to know more about how the business has embedded {insert value} into day-to-day operations?
  • I’m interested in learning more about your company’s culture — would you mind giving me some information on the core values, please?

It’s important to thank the interviewer for whatever information they provide and not to respond negatively or emotionally — you need time to absorb all of the information.

Remember, you don’t have to accept the job even if it’s offered to you.

At Public Practice Recruitment Ltd, we develop close relationships with all of the accountancy firms we work with, so we get to know their culture and way of working. Through this understanding, we can better match accounting professionals with similar values and answer any questions before the interview.

We’d be happy to talk to you about your core values and find you a role that allows you to thrive.
