10 New Habits to Bring You Happiness at Work

Here’s our 10 Top Tips for Happy Accountants

1. Sleep Well

You can maximise your productivity, memory, problem solving skills and alertness by having a good sleep routine. Winding down before bed, going to bed at the same time and aiming for 8 hours solid sleep is crucial for your performance at work and your overall wellbeing and happiness.

2. Wake up early

“Focused, productive successful mornings generate focused, productive, successful days – which inevitably create a successful life.”

Hal Elrod, author of The Miracle Morning

You might be working from home, but by avoiding a rushed morning and having a routine – you’ll be able to enjoy some me time before your family wake, before the phone starts ringing and the emails begin to flood in.

3. Be silent

We’ve avoiding saying ‘meditate’ because if you’ve never tried it before, it can be tricky. But just sit and be silent for one minute. Try as best you can to empty your mind, place your hand on your heart and breathe.

4. Give thanks

There is so much research and evidence to prove the benefits of gratitude. Jot down a few things you feel grateful for every morning – it could be as simple as your cup of coffee. Doing this is a really positive way to start the day.

5. Have a productive workspace

Clutter-free, comfortable and private. Here’s some tips for the perfect home office for accountants.

6. Nourish your body

“The health habits for high performance which I live by are nutritional supplements, choosing ‘real’ food and having conscious habits for health and energy.”

Heather Angell, High Performance Business Mentor

Another work from home tip is to prep all of your meals and snacks the day before. That way you’re not reaching for a quick and dirty pick-me-up during that afternoon dip! But DO have an actual lunch break – away from your desk.

7. Move

Notice not ‘exercise’! Don’t kid yourself that the new year, new you will suddenly morph into a gym bunny. Choose something manageable which you can stick to such as a 20 minute walk, stretching for 10 minutes or yoga. But do it every single day.

8. Make a done list

Forget the to do list. At the end of every day, write down all the things you’ve done. You’ll enjoy the pleasure and satisfaction it brings. Plus, by paying closer attention to how you actually spend your time could help you make small changes to create an even more productive and happy you.

9. Switch off

“Try to bookend your day with the same activity to help create a sense of routine. For example, you could use your time for exercise after work and take a stroll around the block as your ‘commute’ home.”

Health in Mind, mental health charity

As an accountant, you may feel you have to work harder and longer to impress your employer when you work from home. But as long as you’re working smart, you’ll get noticed for your efforts.
